Salt Spring Island + Clay

The Salt Spring Island Potters Guild is putting on their annual show and sale this coming weekend. I am thrilled to have been invited to participate as their guest artist this year.
The opening of the show is tomorrow – May 6th, 5 – 8pm at Mahon Hall, 114 Rainbow Rd. in Ganges on beautiful Salt Spring Island. The hours for the rest of the weekend are Saturday & Sunday, 10 – 4pm. This is the perfect event for viewing a wide variety of island crafted ceramics while enjoying local goodies and sipping Salt Spring wine.

Helen Ormiston Smith is part of the Salt Spring Island Potters Guild. Her work will be at the show this weekend.

win a teapot

On December 15th I will draw for my annual teapot give-away. International Tea Day was established on December 15th five years ago in order to raise awareness of the conditions of tea workers across the globe. As a serious tea fanatic and co-creator of teafarm, I feel strongly about helping to better the lives of the workers that make it possible for me to enjoy my daily tea.
You can enter the draw by sharing your favourite tea story and by making your daily tea a fairly traded experience. Send me a note through my website www.margitnellemann.com to enter the draw. The teapot of this year’s draw is a surprise but I promise it will be a nice one.

5th Annual Open House

It is exactly five years ago that we finished the studio and opened the doors for the first time. What a fun ride it’s been to improve and change and grow within the space and with everyone who has stopped by the studio over these past five years. There is lots to celebrate and be thankful for.
This weekend I will be celebrating and sharing the space with Coco Jones. I fell in love with Coco’s paintings when I first saw them after we moved to the Cowichan several years ago.
Coco has a great sense of humour and a wonderful eye. Her paintings are remarkable. It is such a treat to have her work with me for the month of December.
If you are in the neighbourhood of Vancouver Island I highly recommend you stop by the studio for a visit. Teafarm is well stocked with beautiful teas. We are launching our new zodiac teas this month so stay tuned for your year and flavour!

Getting ready for Circle Craft

This has been one of the busiest season we have ever had at the studio and farm. It has been so much fun meeting people from all over the world. We are still in the process of building our farm and our tea and clay gallery. And we are enjoying the process of making it happen.
My hands are elbow-deep in clay these days while I gear up for the Circle Craft Fair in Vancouver and Out-of-Hand in Victoria, both at the end of November. It’s crunch time and I am trying to get as much creative time in as possible.
Here is a quick look at what’s cooking in the studio….

Filberg Festival

After many hours in the studio and firings of the kilns, it is hard to believe I am finally getting ready to go up Island tomorrow. Thursday is set-up day and the Festival starts Friday morning at 11 am. There is a great music line-up to go with the many artists and artisans. Hope to see you in Comox.

Art of Craft

By Hand Ceramics

By Hand Ceramics

Last week, I went to the opening of the Cultural Olympiad exhibit ‘Art of Craft’ at the Museum of Vancouver. The exhibit, a cultural exchange between Canada and Korea, features craft artists from across Canada as well as Korea.

These are the three parts represented at the museum:

Unity & Diversity: Selected Works – 75 pieces from across Canada recently on display at the 2009 Cheongju International Craft Biennale in the Republic of Korea.

By Hand/BC and Yukon – 51 pieces from Canada’s West Coast with a focus on the artists’ creative processes and studio environments.

Craft from the Republic of Korea – 47 pieces demonstrating the excellence of traditional and contemporary crafts.
