During a year of clay-making I end up with a variety of not-so-perfect pieces. The ideal is not to have any. However, they are a fact of life and I have decided to put them up for sale at my annual Seconds Sale on February 2nd. There is a a wide variety of ceramics reduced by 22% to 82%. Or something like that.

By now you probably get the theme so….
We start at 2pm Saturday February 2nd.

This day also marks the re-opening of the teashop. Come by for a taste of tea and take a second to look at the seconds.

Perhaps it was the excitement around International Tea Day and the draw for the teapot, or perhaps it was working quite a few really long nights…… in any event, I came down with a nasty cold and have been in bed for the past two days. This explains why things got a little quite after the teapot draw.

I am excited to announce that Naomi Saito of Nanaimo is this year’s winner of a handbuilt teapot. Congratulations, Naomi!
And to everyone who came to he farm to participate and to everyone who played along – Thank you! It was fun. We’ll do it again next year.

It is that time of year again for my annual teapot draw.

December 15th is International Tea Day. Years ago, a group of tea workers in India chose this day to pay tribute to all the tea workers across the globe. Many tea drinkers are unaware of the immensely hard work that goes into our daily cups. The tea workers in India are looking to have the UN recognize their initiative. I love the idea of supporting the tea workers in any way I can. So I gave away my first teapot on December 15th five years ago. Now it has become an annual affair.

You can sign up by either coming to the gallery and teashop or you can send me an email – margit@margitnellemann.com – and I will put your name in the draw.

winter solstice exhibit

This is the fourth and last of a series of seasonal exhibits held at Margit Nellemann Gallery at Teafarm on Richards Trail. The exhibit titled ‘HOME’ welcomes the warmth and festive glow of the season featuring felt jewellery and purses by Deb Dumka alongside my clay pieces. The gallery opening is December 7th 6-9pm with both Deb and myself in attendance. The show runs from December 7th until December 30th. Hours are Wednesday – Sunday 10am-5pm, with Friday evening extended hours until 9pm in December. Looking forward to seeing you at the gallery.

tea & talk

Thank you to all who came out last Saturday in the rain to fill the ‘house’ or should we say ‘barn’ for tea, comfy fire, and art. We will set up more chairs this Saturday (October 20th) between 7-9pm when Joe and Sandra share their inspiration for what they have created for the LIGHT clay+wood exhibit in the Gallery. You will see the farm in a whole new light.

Today is just three weeks away from the next exhibit at my studio and gallery.
This one coincides with the fall equinox. On September 22nd night and day are of equal length. And from that day on the days will start getting shorter. It is a time of year where we begin to seek inside and like to add a bit more light and comfort to our homes.

The title of this exhibit is LIGHT clay+wood
Sandra and Joe from GelinasCarr Furniture and I have been creating a variety of light sources for this show. There is everything from lights, lamps to lanterns.
The gallery opening is September 21st 7-10 pm. Unsworth Vineyards will be pouring wines for us and Bradford Boisvert at Amusé on the Vineyard provides the nibbles.

I look forward to seeing you at the gallery….

Do teapots wear hats?

Inspired by the Mad Tea Party…. perhaps? The idea of combining hats and teapots felt like a perfect fit. I love both and really look forward to filling the gallery space with Ulrieke’s funky hats and Art’s amazing teapots. I am heading off to the studio right now to add the finishing touches to some of my teapots that will be on display at the ‘Mad Hats & Teapots’ exhibit. It all starts June 21st at 6pm.

Art Liestman is a woodturner living in Coquitlam, B.C. Art has been involved with woodworking for 30 years. Originally, his interest was in designing and making experimental musical instruments. After a few years of making functional items, he turned to the artistic side of woodturning. One focus of Art’s work in recent years has been teapots. In 2005, Art was asked to make a teapot for the famous Kamm Collection. Since then he has designed and made several series of non-functional wooden teapots.
Art has demonstrated at national and regional symposia. His work has been seen in numerous exhibitions and is available through several galleries across North America.
Art Liestman‘s wonderful teapots will be featured at the upcoming Mad Hats & Teapots exhibit later this month.

Ulrieke Benner, Salt Spring Island textile artist, is looking forward to showing her work on Vancouver Island again. The playful theme of this show will allow her to showcase one of her favourite items to create: hats! Adding some wearable art to the mix, Ulrieke will bring a bundle of chapeaus that are imaginative, spontaneous, and daring that will be sure to please hat lovers of all stripes. Using both felt and straw, hats for all seasons and occasions will be showcased, and she’ll even bring a few of her shawls to round out the collection.

Mad Hats & Teapots is the second exhibit in a series of four centered around equinox, solstice, equinox and solstice. June 21st marks the opening of this coming exhibit at my studio and gallery.
