Sometimes There's a Story...
Sometimes there's a story behind the work, behind all the different pieces. In fact, there often is a story.
The story behind these two vases goes back a bit. Some years ago, I had created a vase that came out of the firing with several flaws that in my eyes made it a second. This was a really tall and skinny vase. I had used recycled clay when making it and hadn't noticed that the joints of the slab were a slightly different colour clay. The seams showed as scars on the smooth brown surface. The design of an oversized circle glazed in brown had a pronounced drip that wasn't intended for the piece. But it was a very unique looking vase and so I used it as a display piece for special events. And it always caught people's attention and I have got many requests for it. In the end I chose to keep it and it is still with me today.
Now many years later, I decided to recreate that same vase although this time using just the one clay body and also with the intention of making the large glazed circle weep. I also decided to make two versions of the vase, the taller one is close in height to the original one and the shorter one is a nice companion for its tall sibling.
You can see these two at my studio shop and they are also available for purchase online.
